Wildfowling is the pursuit of Ducks and
Geese. Its origins have written reference as far back as the 13 century.
Primarily wildfowling was used as a commercial source of food for
all, using methods such as trapping or netting. The development of
modern smoothbore guns in the 1800’s together with more effective
propellants made shooting of wildfowl the preferred method, bringing
inline the true sporting traditions of Great Britain. Unlike other
game shooting disciplines wildfowling has always been enjoyed by all
whatever your background or walk of life- young or old.
Commercial hunting of wildfowl was not sustainable in the UK and by
the early 60’s there was only very small pockets of commercial
hunters operating in this country.
Wildfowling or ‘Water fowling’
as our American cousins call it is not for the faint hearted- Conditions
can be harsh and you can spend many hours cold and wet in the pursuit
of your quarry. Times of hunting wildfowl are either morning flight
at first light or evening flight at dusk, so you really have got to
want to do it to enjoy it!
